Studio portrait of 1873 Private (Pte) Donald McLeod, 37th Battalion, of Rushworth, Vic. A labourer prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard RMS Orontes on 16 August 1916. Proceeding to France in February 1917, Pte McLeod was accidentally wounded in the left foot while undertaking Lewis gun training the following month. After hospital treatment in England he returned to his unit on the Western Front in September 1917. During the battle of Passchendaele on 12 October 1917, Pte McLeod was reported missing in action. Following a Court of Enquiry in 1918, Pte McLeod was officially listed as killed in action on 12 October 1917. He has no known grave, and his name is listed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
