Towards the ablution block and mess (with Clark mast), F.O.B. Baucau
In Cattapan's previous bodies of work he has had a fascination with decrepit cities which has continued into the Timor-Leste works which depict destroyed, crumbling buildings of Timor and the makeshift facilities used by the Australian peacekeepers. In this observational watercolour drawn on the spot, Cattapan has been drawn to this makeshift, ephemeral nature of the bases communication devices and portable buildings including a communications tower directly in the foreground besides the demountable ablutions block. He has also included a burnt out building at the right which hints at Timor-Leste's violent and troubled recent past juxtaposed with the 'UN' sign stenciled on the ablutions block alluding to the UN intervention in 1999 to restore order.
