The crew of HMAS San Michele (54), a converted seine net trawler based in Townsville. The San Michele patrolled harbour approaches against attack by Japanese submarines while convoys were forming. Identified are, back row, left to right: Leading Seaman Arnold Seitz; Seaman Kay, Seaman White, Lieutenant Butcher (Captain), Seaman Maguire (motor machanic), Midshipman Paul Merrick (Mick) Dexter. Front, crouching: Seaman Rowlands, Seaman Clarke (motor mechanic). This image is from the collection of Lieutenant Paul Merrick (Mick) Dexter, who enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RANV) in 1943, and was a watchkeeper and anti-submarine specialist on Corvettes between 1944 and 1946. He continued to serve in the RANV after the Second World War, resigning his commission in 1964.
