Description

Outdoor group portrait of officers onboard HMAS Faye C. In the center is Lieutenant Alexander Joseph Spence, Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RANVR). Directly to his left is Lieutenant Ross Wickham James, RANVR. The other officer is unidentified.

HMAS Faye C. was a converted seine net trawler based in Townsville. It patrolled harbour approaches against attack by Japanese submarines while convoys were forming. There were two other ships based at Townsville; HMAS John Hardy and HMAS San Michele. This image is from the collection of Lieutenant Paul Merrick (Mick) Dexter, who enlisted in the RANVR in 1943, and was a watchkeeper and anti-submarine specialist on Corvettes between 1944 and 1946. He continued to serve in the RANVR after the Second World War, resigning his commission in 1964.
