Description
Following a visit to Devonport, Tasmania, HMAS Deloraine and HMAS Echuca were detached from the 20th Minesweeping Flotilla, and with HMAS HDML 1326 and HMAS HDML 1328, were sent to the Rabaul and Kavieng areas to clear moored mines and magnetic mine fields. Here a paravane of the Orepesa sweep is being stored in its cradle on HMAS Deloraine, following a sweeping operation. This image is from the collection of Lieutenant Paul Merrick (Mick) Dexter, who enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RANV) in 1943, and was a watchkeeper and anti-submarine specialist on Corvettes between 1944 and 1946. He continued to serve in the RANV after the Second World War, resigning his commission in 1964.
