Informal group portrait of NX43768 Corporal (Cpl) Leonard Bruce (Len) Smeaton (left), 2/33 Battalion, of Earlwood, NSW, and five of his fellow soldiers. The note on the back of the photograph reads, 'This group of me and my best mates was taken outside the Australian Soldiers Canteen in Tel Aviv. The group comprises of myself, Fred Morath, Chic Glassey, Ron Stewart, Ron Shaw, and Harry Johnson.' The men are probably all from 2/33 Battalion, and are probably listed from left to right. Fred Morath is NX43920 Private (Pte) Osmund Frederick Morath, of Narrabri, NSW. NX43597 Pte Charles Raymond 'Chic' Glassey, of Leichhardt, NSW, died of injuries in Palestine on 20 March 1942, aged 22. Ron Shaw is probably NX44159 Cpl Ronald Neil Shaw, of Fairy Meadow, NSW. Harry Johnson is possibly NX43723 Cpl Henry Thomas Johnson. After serving in the Second World War in the Middle East and Papua New Guinea, Len Smeaton enlisted as a Private (Pte) in the Korean War, serving with A Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). 2400121 Pte Smeaton died on 8 November 1950 of wounds received at the Battle of Pakchon on 5 November.
