Studio portrait of Fumika Itoh and her husband 22682 Private (Pte) John Kenneth Clifford, British Commonwealth Forces Korea (BCFK), taken to commemorate their commitment ceremony. Fumika is wearing a traditional purple silk kimono which she had made in 1949 for special occasions. She is wearing it with a turquoise embroidered obi (waist sash). Pte Clifford had served in the Second World War (service number NX206168) prior to his posting to the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Japan. He met Fumika in 1947. From 28 December 1950 until 8 January 1951 when he was wounded, Pte Clifford served in the Korean War with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). He returned to Japan, then in 1953 was posted back to Australia. Fumika and their young daughter Mary sailed to Australia later in 1953 on the New Australia with other war brides and children. Despite their marriage, the Australian Government initially restricted the period of Fumika's residency to five years. Mary was not named on any official documents and was included in Fumika's passport photograph (see P08339.003). A second daughter, Julia, was born in Australia.
