Studio portrait of 406662 Flying Officer (FO) John Frederick (Jack) Pettit, No. 6 Service Flying Training School, of Perth WA; formerly of Wellington, South Africa. FO Pettit enlisted in the RAAF on 3 March 1941. On the afternoon of 14 July 1943 FO Pettit was performing a test flight, following a maintenance inspection, on Avro-Anson aircraft W-2556. Also on aboard the aircraft were a maintenance team consisting of 27786 Corporal James Dennis Horrigan, 116182 Aircraftman (AC) Desmond Whenan, 45971 AC John Vincent Colin Matheson and 59315 Leading Aircraftman (LAC) Donald Beresford Tucker. W-2556 failed to return to the training school at Mallala, SA. An extensive search discovered debris in the sea off Parham, SA. No trace of the crew was found. FO Pettit was 24 years of age.
