Studio portrait of 419 Private David Joseph Maloney, 42nd Battalion, of Woodenbong, NSW. A farmer prior to enlisting in November 1915, Pte Maloney embarked from Sydney with the 42nd Battalion on board HMAT Borda (A30) on 5 June 1916. They arrived in France on 25 November 1916 and a month later Pte Maloney was hospitalised with influenza and mumps. He returned to his unit at the front on 28 January 1917. Pte Maloney was killed in action on 31 July 1917 by a shell explosion at Warneton, near Ypres, Belgium. He was 27 years of age.
