Studio portrait of 3572 Private (Pte) Leonard (Len) Sizer, 6th Battalion, of Echuca, Victoria (right) and his cousin, 2945 Pte William (Bill) Sizer, 5th Pioneer Battalion of Boulder, WA. Len Sizer, married to Ethel, was employed as a steam engine driver prior to his enlistment on 30 June 1915. He embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 11 October 1915 with the 8th Battalion. He was taken on strength by the 6th Battalion in Egypt and preceded to France in March 1916 where he rose through the ranks, being promoted to Lance Corporal in May, Corporal in December 1916 and Sergeant (Sgt) in August of 1917. Sgt Len Sizer died of wounds received in action on 20 April 1918 and was buried at Caestre Military Cemetery. A statement given by one of the men in his unit for Sizer's Red Cross Wounded and Missing file records that Sgt Sizer was "one of the best, and liked by everyone". His cousin Bill married to Bessie and the father of four children, was working as a miner when he enlisted on 27 April 1916. He embarked from Fremantle aboard HMAT Port Melbourne (A16) in 30 October 1916. He died of wounds received in action on 1 November 1917 and is buried at the Nine Elms British Cemetery, Poperinghe.
