Studio portrait of WX32775 Private (Pte), later Corporal, Richard Sextus Daly Winter, 2/48 Battalion of Belmont, WA; who was born in Ceylon. Pte Winter enlisted in December 1940. After service in the Middle East at Tobruk, from April 1941, and at El Alamein, from July 1942, the 2/48 Battalion was sent to New Guinea and, in April 1945, to Morotai, Borneo. Corporal Winter was killed in action at Tarakan, Borneo, on 3 May 1945. He was 25 years of age. Cpl Winter's younger brother WX11955 Patrick Daly Winter, was killed in action at Wewak, New Guinea, on 15 May 1945.
