Description

Studio portrait of allied Prisoners of War (POW) at Dulmen Camp. Stretcher bearer 6062 Private (Pte) George Vincent Spark, 13th field Ambulance is believed to be standing second from left, back row. A jeweller from Geelong, Victoria, Pte Spark embarked from Melbourne aboard SS Makarini on 10 September 1915. He served with the No. 2 Australian General Hospital (2AGH) in Egypt before being transferred to the 13th Field Ambulance. Pte Spark was reported missing in action at Mouquet Farm on 31 August 1916 and was soon after reported a prisoner of war at Dulmen Camp. He was released from captivity on 16 February 1918 and following convalescence in England, returned to France where he returned to the 13th Field Ambulance, and subsequently the 2AGH. Pte Spark returned to Australia in March 1919. Another Australian, probably also a stretcher bearer is sitting front left.
