Informal portrait of Private (Pte) Walter Herbert Gilchrist wearing the Australian Rules football jumper of the 1912 premiership winning Watchem team. Pte Gilchrist, a farmer from Corack, near Donald in Victoria, enlisted in 1915 but died of cerebrospinal meningitis on 18 August 1915. Pte Gilchrist was still under training and was not allocated to a unit nor issued with a service number at the time of his death. He was aged 27 years. [See also P08261.040]
