Studio portrait of 5557 Corporal (Cpl) George Thomas Blore, 21st Battalion of Melbourne, ...
Studio portrait of 5557 Corporal (Cpl) George Thomas Blore, 21st Battalion of Melbourne, Victoria. The Assistant Secretary to the State War Council prior to enlistment, he embarked as Acting Company Sergeant Major on HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 25 September 1916. Cpl Blore was killed in action at the battle of Bullecourt on 4 May 1917. He was originally reported missing but an informant, WA Clifford, stated that he and Captain Jones had found his body on the battlefield and buried him there; this grave was lost in subsequent fighting and Cpl Blore's name is recorded on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial. He was 36 years old. The photographer's backdrop is one that portrays a bombed and shell damaged French town and is painted in direct response to the (then) current events.
