Studio portrait of 2863 Private (Pte) Sydney John Hotston, 51st Battalion, of Perth, WA. A motor mechanic prior to enlistment, he embarked from Fremantle on 9 November 1916 aboard HMAT Argyllshire (A8). On 14 October 1917 Pte Hotston died of wounds received during the battle of Passchendaele; he was aged 28 years. His father was Reverend S Hotston, a Baptist minister in NSW, and his two brothers 161 Warrant Officer 2 Henry Hotson and 27300 Gunner Roland Frederick Hotston both survived the war.
