Studio portrait of three soldiers from the Clarence River area of NSW, and an unidentified child. Far left is 851 Private (Pte) Wilfred Ernest Davis, 41st Battalion, of Palmers Island, NSW. A farmer prior to enlisting in January 1916, Pte Davis embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 18 May 1916. On 5 June 1917 he was killed in action when struck on the head by a shell fragment at Ploegsteert Wood near Messines, Belgium. Pte Davis was 27 years of age. The soldier sitting is 3610 Pte John William Garrett Bush, 45th Battalion, of Iluka, NSW, who returned to Australia in July 1919. On the right is 3033 Private Frank Buckland, 20th Battalion, of Palmers Island, NSW, who returned to Australia in May 1919.
