Description
Informal outdoor portrait of Lieutenant Engineer David James Thomas, RAN Reserve, originally of Hamilton, NSW. Lt Thomas enlisted on 5 May 1941, and served on various shore bases and ships including HMAS Katoomba. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr). Late in 1945 he was aboard the tug HMAS Heros off the coast of Queensland. Heros was involved in the towing of hulks which had been bombed by the Japanese in Darwin harbour. Lt Cdr Thomas became ill aboard ship and died on 20 December 1945 in Bowen General Hospital, Qld. He was aged 45.
