Description
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt), later Captain, John James Marshall, 3rd Battalion, of Bexley NSW. A clerk prior to enlisting in February 1915, he embarked from Sydney with the 4th Reinforcements on board HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 17 March 1915. Lt Marshall served at Gallipoli from July 1915 and was promoted to the rank of Captain in July 1916. He was later transferred to the 55th Battalion and served on the Western Front from January 1917. Captain Marshall was killed in action by a shell explosion at Villers Bretonneux, France, on 27 April 1918, aged 26 years.
