Studio portrait of NX2529 Private (Pte) Thomas Johnson, 2/30 Battalion, of Sydney, NSW. Pte Johnson was a butcher prior to enlisting in April 1941. His unit arrived for service in Malaya on 15 August 1941. Following the fall of Singapore to the Japanese on 15 February 1942, Pte Johnson was reported as missing and believed to be a prisoner of war (POW). It was later learned that he was interned in Malaya and then in Thailand. Pte Johnson died of illness in a POW camp on 30 December 1943. He was 38 years of age.
