Studio portrait of 4134 Private (Pte) (?Temporary Sergeant) Laud Rupert Somerville Provan, 30th Battalion, of Summer Hill, NSW. A clerk prior to enlisting in February 1916, he embarked from Sydney with the 10th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 7 October 1916. Pte Provan was promoted to Lance Corporal in March 1917 and then to Temporary Corporal the next month. He was killed in action at Vaulx-Vraucourt, France, on 18 May 1917, aged 24.
