Group portrait of soldiers of the 36th Battalion and largely from the Singleton, NSW, region. Seated from left: 2572 Private (Pte) Thomas Gibbs, 36th Battalion, of Branxton, NSW; 2517 Pte Arthur Archinal, 36th Battalion, of Singleton, NSW. Pte Archinal was awarded the Military Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations near Bray [the Somme, France], on 22 August, 1918....Not only did the courage and pluck of this stretcher bearer set a fine example to his comrades, but he was also largely instrumental in saving the lives of many men."; 2545 Pte Alfred George Collibee, 36th Battalion, of Singleton, NSW; 2674 Pte Vincent Ernest Wedlock, 36th Battalion, of Bellinger River, NSW. Standing from left is 2628 Private (Pte) Hope Chapman McAlpine, 36th Battalion, of Howes Valley, NSW; 2646 Pte Thomas Porter, of Lower Quippolly, NSW. Pte Porter was awarded the Military Medal and Bar in 1918; Pte 2689 Kenneth Walton Roberts, 36th Battalion, of Tarro, NSW; 2645 Pte Lea Roy (Roy) Paul, 36th Battalion, of Gouldsville, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting in August 1916, Pte Paul embarked from Sydney with the 36th Battalion, 5th Reinforcements, which included all in this portrait. He was killed in action while taking part in a raid on Messines, Belgium, in the early hours of 21 July 1917. He was 30 years of age.
