Informal portrait of 424584 Pilot Officer (PO) Bruce Frederick Greenwood, RAAF. Whilst serving with No.51 Squadron, RAF, his Halifax bomber was shot down over Germany and all crew members were able to successfully bale out. Two crew members managed to avoid capture, however PO Greenwood (the navigator) and four other crew members were captured. Shortly afterwards they were taken to a nearby aerodrome by German soldiers and machine gunned from behind. PO Greenwood and three of his crew were killed and a fifth crew member managed to escape. The perpetrators were later arrested and charged with war crimes and all were sentenced to death. PO Greenwood and his comrades were buried in the Dreirwalde Cemetery, Germany. Their remains were later exhumed and re-interred in the Reichewald Forest British Military Cemetery. Letters related to the service of PO Greenwood are held in the Australian War Memorial.
