Studio portrait of 403832 Aircraftman (AC) (later Flight Lieutenant) John Gilbert Spence, 70 Squadron RAF, of Newcastle NSW. Enlisting in May 1941, AC Spence attained the rank of Pilot Officer and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 7 January 1944. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt). Flt Lt Spence was discharged on 6 September 1946.
