Studio portrait of 5320 Sergeant (Sgt) Walter Allan Leonard Cleary, 23rd Battalion. He was briefly a Company Sergeant Major during training in Australia. A travelling salesman of Donald, Victoria, prior to enlistment, Cleary embarked as a Private with the 14th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Miltiades on 1 August 1916. Disembarking in Plymouth, England in September 1916, he proceeded with his unit to France the following month and was promoted to the rank of Sgt in December 1916. Sgt Cleary was killed in action at Noreuil, France, on 20 March 1917. He was aged 26 years.
