Studio portrait of 6516 Private (Pte) James Barclay Hodge. Born in Donald, Victoria, he worked as a share farmer at "Rock View", Old Junee, New South Wales when he applied to enlist on 16 March 1916 at Cootamundra, New South Wales. Pte Hodge was assigned to the 3rd Battalion on 3 May 1916 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic on 7 October 1916. After two months with the 1st Training Battalion in England, he proceeded to France in February 1917 and was taken on strength to the 3rd Battalion on 11 March 1917. Pte Hodge was killed in action near Bullecourt on 5 May 1917 and buried in the vicinity of Maricourt Wood. He was 30 years old. He has no known grave and his death is recorded on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
