Studio portrait of 689 (608) Private (Pte) Walter Combs, labourer, of Corack West via Donald, Victoria. He joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment on 1 October 1914 and embarked aboard HMAT Armadale on 12 February 1915 for the Dardanelles. His service number was originally recorded as 608 which was subsequently changed to 689. Tpr Combs joined his regiment at Gallipoli on 2 August 1915 and was killed in action on 7 August 1915, aged 42 years. This image is one from a poster produced at Donald, Victoria, commemorating the deaths of soldiers associated with Donald and surrounding district during the First World War.
