Studio portrait of 2690 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) John Wallace Walder, farmer, of Watchem, Victoria. He joined the 6th Battalion as a Private (Pte) on 24 June 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Anchises for Egypt. Pte Walder joined his battalion in Gallipoli on 31 October 1915 and was promoted to L Cpl on 9 November 1915. He was wounded in action on 20 November 1915 and was evacuated to Alexandria, Egypt, where he remained on the dangerously ill list until 22 December 1915 before being admitted to 1st Australian General Hospital, Cairo, on 27 December and again placed on the dangerously ill list. L Cpl Walder died of these wounds on 8 January 1916, aged 26 years.
