Description
Studio portrait of 5880 Private (Pte) Francis John Nugent, farmer, of Wyalong, New South Wales (his next-of-kin came from Donald, Victoria). He enlisted in the 17th Battalion on 11 April 1916 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic on 7 October 1916 for Plymouth, England. He joined his battalion on the Western Front, France, on 6 February 1917. Pte Nugent was wounded in action on 3 May 1917 during an attack on the Hindenburg Line and died of these wounds in 9th General hospital, Rouen, on 24 May 1917. He was aged 32 years. This image is one from a poster produced at Donald, Victoria, commemorating the deaths of soldiers associated with Donald and surrounding district during the First World War.
