Studio portrait of 8659 Driver (Dvr) Maurice Walker Basset, farmer, of Donald, Victoria. He enlisted in the 6th Field Artillery Brigade (6 FAB) on 2 September 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Persic on 22 November 1915 for Suez. 6 FAB relocated to the Western Front, France in May 1916. Dvr Basset was transferred to the 22 FAB on May 1916 and then to 5 FAB in January 1917. Dvr Basset was killed in action in France, near the Belgium border, on 9 August 1917 aged 29 years. This image is one from a poster produced at Donald, Victoria, commemorating the deaths of soldiers associated with Donald and surrounding district during the First World War. The poster is held at P08261.001.
