Studio portrait of 4197 Private (Pte) William Charles Smith, 24th Battalion, of Collingwood, Vic. A printer prior to enlisting in December 1915, Pte Smith embarked from Melbourne with the 10th Reinforcements on board HMAT (A18) Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. After further training in England, his unit arrived in France for service on the Western Front in September 1916. Private Smith was wounded in action by a gas attack on 21 March 1918 and killed in action at Mont St Quentin, France, on 2 September 1918. Pte Smith was 21 years of age.
