Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX40346 Private Ernest Roy Richards, 2/18 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Malaya, 1941.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of two letters and associated envelopes from Private Ernest Roy Richards to his cousin, Mrs Eula Jacobson. The letters, dated 18 July and c. November 1941, were written while Private Richards was serving with 2/18 Australian Infantry Battalion in Malaya. In his letters, Private Richards writes about hearing of the death of a friend, being on guard duty, swimming, hot and rainy weather, and seeing films. Private Richards also responds to news regarding family members and mutual acquaintances.

History / Summary

Private Ernest Roy Richards enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 19 June 1945. He served with 2/18 Australian Infantry Battalion in Malaya, but was captured as a prisoner of war of the Japanese in February 1941. On 20 July 1945, Private Richards died of illness while he was a prisoner at a camp in Borneo. He is buried at Labuan War Cemetery, Malaya.
