Description
Lieutenant (Lt) Harold Leslie Henley (left) and his father Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Thomas Henley (right) on camels at the Sphinx. Lt Col Henly was a Member of Parliament who volunteered to go to Egypt as a commissioner for the Australian Comforts Fund to co-ordinate the distribution of comforts to the troops. A law student at the University of Sydney, Thomas Henley enlisted in 1914 with the AN&MEF for New Guinea. He returned to Australia and enlisted in the AIF, later embarking as a lieutenant with the 6th Reinforcements, 13th Battalion. Promoted to Captain in March 1916, Capt Henley proceeded to France. He was killed at Mouquet Farm on 15 August 1916.
