Studio portrait of 4055 Private John Nielson Attwood, 17th Battalion, of Parramatta, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Star of England (A15) on 8 March 1916. Pte Attwood was killed in action on 3 May 1917 near Lagnicourt, France aged 28. He was buried in the field in the vicinity of the Bullecourt Hindenberg line. Post war his body was not recovered and he is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
