Studio portrait of 1871 Private (Pte) John Walter William Bentley, 53rd Battalion of Parramatta, NSW. A carter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic on 14 April 1916. Pte bentley was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, on 13th May 1917, aged 36. His body was never found and he is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
