Studio portrait of 4183 Private Edward James Filby, 3rd (later 2nd) Battalion of Parramatta, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 30 December 1915. He was killed in action on 23 July 1916 near Albert, France, aged 24. He was buried south of Pozieres. Post war his grave was not found and he is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
