Studio portrait of 1897 Private Herbert Freeman, 59th (later 57th) Battalion of Parramatta, NSW, brother of 2509 Private Percy Freeman, (died of wounds 15 May 1917, see P08624.048). A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 4 May 1916. He died on 14 August 1917 while a prisoner of war in German hands at Kriegs Lazarett 7, Gruppe 2, Sous le Bois, Mauberge, France, aged 28. He is buried in the Maubeuge-Centre Cemetery, France.
