Studio portrait of 6117 Private John Charles Holding, 20th Battalion of Manly, NSW. A surveyor's chainman prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 25 October 1916. He was killed in action at Westhoek Ridge, Belgium on 20 September 1917, aged 23. Post war his body was not recovered. He is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
