Studio portrait of 4457 Private William John Cook, 2nd Battalion of Parramatta, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard the RMS Osterley on 15 January 1916. He was killed in action on 9 April 1917 when hit by machine gun fire while on patrol near Hermies, France, aged 30. He is buried in the Hermies Hill British Cemetery, France.
