Studio portrait of 2594 Private Charles Laird, 39th Battalion of Granville, NSW. A boilermaker prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 9 November 1916. He was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 4 October 1917, aged 31. He was buried in the field. Post war his grave was not located and he is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
