Studio portrait of 674A Private Hugh Joseph Bentley Callaghan, 5th Australian Machine Gun Corps, (later 2nd Battalion) of Auburn, NSW. A bank clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Suevic (A29) on 21 June 1917. He was killed in action at Hangard Wood, France on 9 April 1918, aged 23. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
