Description
Studio portrait of 43 Private Alwin Ernest Dawes (also known as Alwyn Ernest Dawes), 3rd Divisional Cyclist (later 2nd) Battalion of Nyngan, NSW. A motor mechanic prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 18 May 1916. He was wounded in action (2nd time wounded) on 15 August 1918 at Morcourt, France, and died of his wounds on 16 August 1918 at the 55th Casualty Clearing Station, France aged 21. He is buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
