Studio portrait of 2639 Private (later Corporal) Walter Douglas Paine, 1st Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A mercer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Runic (A54) on 9 August 1915. He was killed in action on 22 July 1916 at Pozieres, France, aged 28. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. He was the brother of Captain Alfred Paine, 18th Battalion, mentioned in despatches, the uncle of 4832 Private (later Corporal) Harold John Paine, 1st (later 53rd) Battalion, who died of wounds on 11 September 1918, and 1277 Private (later Company Sergeant Major) Arthur Richard Paine, 30th Battalion, who died of wounds on 12 December 1917.
