Studio portrait of 4832 Private (later Corporal) Harold John Paine, 1st (later 53rd) Battalion of Paddington, NSW. A clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Star of England (A15) on 8 March 1916. He was wounded in action on 1 September 1918 at Peronne, France. He was moved to the UK and died of his wounds in the Graylingwell War Hospital, on 11 September 1918, aged 22. He is buried in the Chichester Cemetery, United Kingdom. He was the brother of 1277 Private (later Company Sergeant Major) Arthur Richard Paine, 30th Battalion, died of wounds 12 December 1917, and the nephew of 2639 Private (later Corporal) Walter Douglas Paine, 1st Battalion, killed in action 22 July 1916, and Captain Alfred Paine, 18th Battalion, mentioned in despatches
