Description
Studio portrait of 3192 Private Frank Hessell (also spelt Hassall) Pickering, 18th (later 3rd) Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A telegraphist prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Suevic (A29) on 20 November 1915. He was killed in action on 22 July 1916 at Pozieres, France, aged 23. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was the brother of 3883A Private Roland Taafe Pickering, 3rd Battalion, killed in action on 17 August 1916.
