Studio portrait of 11435 Gunner (later Bombardier) John Ernest Shields, 1st Field Artillery (later 103rd Howitzer Battery, 3rd Field Artillery) Brigade of Auburn, NSW. A carpenter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard RMS Osterley on 15 January 1916. He was killed in action on 26 May 1918 near Corby, France, aged 23. He is buried in Franvillers Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
