Studio portrait of 4552 Private John Edward Wheeler, 19th Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A slaughterman prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 9 April 1916. He was killed in action, on 5 October 1916, near Ypres, Belgium, aged 25. He is buried in the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, Belgium.
