Studio portrait of 2173 Private John Cooper Ellis, 45th Battalion of Lidcombe, NSW. A butcher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 22 August 1916. On 21 February 1917, while on patrol at Gueudecourt, France, he was in killed action, aged 39. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
