Description
Studio portrait of 276 Private John Arthur Anderson, 14th Machine Gun Company of Smithfield, NSW. A pearl diver prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 1 May 1916. He was killed in action on 2 April 1917 as he was leaving a dugout near Louvreville, France, aged 21. Although he was buried near where he fell, post war, his grave was never located and he is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
