Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant (later Lieutenant) Henry Bartlett Davis, MC, 13th Battalion of Sydney, NSW. An examiner prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Beltana (A72) on 25 November 1916. He was doing duty on 2 October 1918 with the 27th American Division during operations near Bellenglise, France when he was killed in action, aged 23. He is buried in the Unicorn Cemetery, Vend'huile, France. He was awarded a Military Cross for "useful and gallant conduct on 18 September 1918 near Le Verguier, North West of St Quentin and against the Hindenberg outpost line".
