Studio portrait of 194 Sergeant Harry Fifield Didcote, 17th Battalion of Wetherill Park, via Fairfield, NSW. A tanner prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 12 May 1915. For conspicuous services rendered, he was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's despatch of 9 April 1917. He was killed in action on 12 January 1918 during action in Belgium, aged 29. He is buried in Gunners Farm Military Cemetery, Belgium. His brother, 1617 Private Wilfred Bartlett Didcote was killed in action at Gallipoli on 27 August 1915. (see P08624.456).
This portrait was supplied to the Cumberland Argus by family friends, the Bell family, and was taken in 1917 by Mallett & Sons in Tewkesbury, UK.
Harry Didcote's older brother 3194 Corporal Albert James Didcote was killed at Loos on 8 October 1915, while he was serving in the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.
